Upper House orders release of desalination documents - 9 November 2005

The NSW Upper House has backed – 21 votes to 16 – Greens MLC Ian Cohen’s motion requiring the Government to release documents relating to the proposed desalination plant at Kurnell.

“I am pleased that the Greens have been able to secure the release of these documents which will be made available to the public in two weeks time,” Mr Cohen said.

“The desalination plant is being presented by the Government as a fait accompli yet the cost efficient environmental alternatives – demand management, water re-use, recycling and storm water harvesting have not been properly assessed.

“The public should be given all the information about the real environmental and economic costs of desalination and the alternatives so it can make an informed judgement.

“The desalination plant is a greenhouse nightmare which will help cement NSW as one of the most polluting places - in per capita terms- on the planet.

“I hope information gleaned from the documents ordered for release today can help shed some light on this latest Government folly” Mr Cohen said.
