Statement of support for New Tang Dynasty Television - 4 September 2008

As a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, I urge Eutelsat to honour its contractual obligations, its mission statement and the principles of international and EU law by resuming transmission of the New Tang Dynasty Television broadcast. The recent termination of the NTDTV broadcast into China by Eutelsat is unacceptable and will have wide ramifications for future dealings of the company.

The politically motivated termination is a serious incursion on the basic human rights of New Tang Dynasty Television Station and its viewers. Eutelsat must reinstatement transmission of the New Tang Dynasty Television broadcast into China immediately.

Freedom of press is a fundamental concept to healthy and prosperous societies. Article 19(2) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states:

“Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his/her choice.”

Eutelsat must act as a socially responsible corporation and take steps to ensure this important human right is not trampled and disregarded. Global peace and unity will not be achieved if corporations such as Eutelsat become willing proxies that channel the more regressive elements of countries undertaking significant economic and social transformations.

I call upon Eutelsat to consider what type of global political legacy its business decisions will create. Eutelsat has a positive role to play in securing social and economic moderisation of a country whose people are yearning to amplify the enjoyment and fulfilment of their human rights. I certainly hope integrity and a sense of social responsibility will prevail in your deliberations and dealing on this matter.
