Review panel should be able to reject desalination - 13 December 2005

Greens MLC Ian Cohen says the Government’s desalination review panel should be able to consider whether the desalination plant should go ahead at all.

“The terms of reference of the Independent Review Panel should be expanded so that the full implications of the desalination plant can be ruled on,” Mr Cohen said.

“If the Government is so confident of the merits of its arguments it should be willing to subject itself to such an independent assessment.

“Having a review panel that cannot make a recommendation on whether the plant should go ahead is a Clayton’s panel.

“The review panel risks becoming another public relations stunt in a long line of such initiatives relating to the desalination plant.

“I have asked the Government to provide details of how much is being spent on advertising and public relations in connection to the proposed Kurnell project. I am concerned millions of dollars of taxpayers money is being squandered that could otherwise be put into water saving and recycling projects.

“The Upper House inquiry which I chair has now opened and I encourage people to
make submissions to what will be a genuine investigation into desalination and the alternatives. Submissions close in February,” Mr Cohen said.
