Greens MLC Ian Cohen says any reshuffle of ministerial portfolios in NSW would be an ideal opportunity to drop plans for the desalination plant.
“Media reports that Carl Scully may lose ministerial responsibility for water present any new minister with a face saving opportunity to get out of desalination,” Mr Cohen said.
“The people of Sydney don’t want desalination. The scientific evidence is stacking up against desalination and there are better economic and environmental alternatives.
“Recent revelations uncovered by the Greens of a proposal by AGL to use its disused pipes network to move recycled water show that there are much better alternatives.
“The Premier should direct a new minister to listen to the community about the folly of desalination. This would be welcomed by the electorate.
“Mr Iemma has driven the desalination project. He should admit his mistake and come into line with the positive aspirations of the people of Sydney who are trying to do their bit on water conservation,” Mr Cohen said
