Greens MLC Ian Cohen today called for the introduction of permanent water restrictions for Sydney.
“The fact that it is raining now (and forecasts show more is on the way) should not become an excuse to start a profligate use of water,” Mr Cohen said.
“Sydney needs a permanent system of water restrictions so that a buffer water supply is created when the rain stops.
“Water restrictions are the cost effective environmental solution that would help make the Kurnell desalination plant redundant.
“What’s more the people of Sydney are more than willing to comply. Papers released to parliament as a result of the Greens motion last year show that 74% of Sydney siders think permanent water restrictions are acceptable.
“Climate Change doesn’t just mean hotter weather it means more unpredictable weather. One way for Sydney to adapt to that inevitability is to put in place water restrictions, which is simply a reasonable water use strategy, on an ongoing basis.
“The Government should be open and honest about this with the public. Taking the people of Sydney into their trust about the need to change water use habits will help deliver the results we need.
“We need to institute the sensible, sane and frugal use of water forever,” Mr Cohen said.
