The NSW Government’s recently announced third round of grants for its water savings fund is to be commended for encouraging large organizations to save water, according to NSW Greens Upper House MP Ian Cohen.
“The Minister for Water Utilities, David Campbell, is correct to point out that big business has been lagging behind the average household in this area,” said Mr Cohen.
“I am glad that the Government has finally come round to my way of thinking. Minister Campbell made particular mention of waterless urinals and electronic taps. Parliament House doesn’t have either of these items. It doesn’t even have dual flush toilets. When I have asked questions on these matters in The House in the past they were pooh-poohed by the Government.
“Previous discussions with Minister Sartor revealed he had significant knowledge of flush volumes but still produced a flat no to reform. I have previously offered to conduct an energy and water audit of NSW parliament but again to no avail.
“Perhaps these ideas will be taken seriously now the idea has come from one of their own Ministers.
“The NSW Government is, as The Premier pointed out yesterday, the biggest organisation in the State. It ought practice what it preaches with the Water Savings Fund and implement water conservation measures in all of its buildings, especially State Parliament. Otherwise it will find its environmental credentials going down the toilet,” Mr Cohen said.
