No secret Snowy sell-off: Greens bill passes Upper House - 7 June 2006

Any proposed sale of Snowy Hydro will have extra scrutiny after a bill put forward by Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen was tonight supported by members from across the political spectrum.

“From now on any proposed sale of the Snowy will require debate and approval by both houses of the NSW parliament,” Mr Cohen said.

“This bill means that the Minister no longer has the power to dispose of shares in this important and iconic source of water and power without first answering to the people of NSW.

“The people of NSW need this insurance against desperate attempts to sell off precious state assets. Debate and approval by both houses of parliament will make sure the public has a say in what happens to their property.”

“I gave notice of this bill in parliament last month, well before the proposed sale of Snowy Hydro was abandoned by federal and state governments. I congratulate all the members of Parliament for supporting my bill, which I expect will pass through the lower house tomorrow.” Mr Cohen said.
