Metering trial is glass half empty - 28 June 2006

A trial of water meters for new unit blocks in Rouse Hill and Hornsby ignores the possibilities of fitting meters to existing apartments, said NSW Greens Upper House MP Ian Cohen.

"The pilot project is an important first step in reducing water consumption in new apartment buildings, but it does not go far enough," Mr Cohen said.

"Individual metering of all apartments is possible now thanks to developing technologies. Retrofitting existing apartment blocks will become increasingly more cost effective, meaning all apartments could be individually metered for their water usage, helping to save huge amounts of water.

"Sydney Water should be exploring these technologies, highlighted by the recent Upper House inquiry that I chaired into a Sustainable Water Supply for Sydney, so they are ready to harness them as soon as they are affordable.

"Sydney has plenty of water to meet its growing needs. The people of New South Wales have shown that when they are given the responsibility for their water use they take up the challenge enthusiastically.

"Now the Iemma Government must make good its promises to increase water recycling for industry, and it must ditch the expensive contingency plan for a energy-guzzling desalination plant." Mr Cohen said.
