Iemma should match SA Liberals on Greenhouse - 23 February 2006

Greens MLC Ian Cohen today called on the Premier Morris Iemma to match recent election campaign commitments made by the Liberal Opposition in South Australia.

“The Liberal party in South Australia has committed to reduce greenhouse gases by 20% by the year 2020 and then 60% by 2050,” Mr Cohen said.

“NSW has no such reduction plan in place. NSW has a target of 60% by 2050 but without an adequate intermediate step in place there is no incentive for real action.

“In fact, the NSW Government has only committed to bring greenhouses gases back to 2000 levels by the year 2025 – a 0% target compared with the SA Liberals 20% reduction plan five years sooner.

“NSW is losing valuable investment opportunities and jobs by failing to back the renewables industry. It is time to set realistic targets like those adopted by the SA Liberals and to rule out any new coal fired power stations for this state.

“The Greens will be making greenhouse and the NSW addiction to coal one of our key election issues for the 2007 campaign.

“The Greens will want to see real action on targets and support for renewables from both Labor and the Opposition before the state poll,” Mr Cohen said.
