The eve of Clean Up Day is an ideal time for the Government to get behind the Greens plan for Container Deposit Legislation, Greens MLC Ian Cohen said today.
“The community will be doing its bit to clean up this weekend. It’s time the Government did its bit by taking legislative action,” Mr Cohen said.
“Container Deposit Legislation (CDL) works in South Australia and in many other countries and it would work here to drastically reduce the amount of waste and litter from packaging in NSW.
“I have given notice in the Legislative Council for a workable form of CDL for drink containers.
“The scheme would require 10cents to be refunded for every beverage container returned by members of the public. It is a fabulous way to get recycling going as well a discouraging littering.
“No doubt it would also be an opportunity for children to earn some extra pocket money in a responsible way.
“Local councils, community groups, members of the public all do a huge amount to clean up and recycle but they are being let down by their state government.
“A report in 2001 also found that CDL is good for business providing a potential net economic benefit to NSW of $70-100m per year.
“Container Deposit Legislation would be a win for the environment, a win for the economy and a political winner for Premier Iemma,” Mr Cohen said.
