In the wake of Kim Beazley’s re-commitment to a renewable energy target, Greens MLC Ian Cohen today called on Morris Iemma to adopt a strong target for renewable energy production NSW.
“NSW has no effective target for renewable energy, leaving the coal industry to rule the roost in Australia’s biggest state,” Mr Cohen said.
“While Kim Beazley’s announcements today are effectively a re-hash of old ALP policy that falls well short of the mark, at least Federal Labor has committed to some target for renewable energy.
“Meanwhile Morris Iemma sits on his hands. He should be getting behind the jobs rich future industries that the renewable sector offers.
“As well as setting a renewable target, the NSW government must rule out new coal fired power stations.
“This would send a message to the wind and solar business that they can invest with confidence. There simply will not be enough investment certainty if the renewable sector fears that they will be undermined by cheap dirty coal power in the future.
“If Morris Iemma wants to set a popular, positive, high employment and future securing agenda he should start with a renewable energy target for NSW,” Mr Cohen said.
