Ian Cohen welcomes move by Beattie to tax gas guzzlers - 31 May 2007

While the NSW government vetoes proposals to drop vehicle registration fees for owners of expensive low-emission cars, their QLD counterparts are moving in a more climate friendly direction.

“With 1600 people dying every year from illnesses related to air pollution, any price signal to consumers in NSW to buy a low emissions vehicle instead of a gas guzzler would be welcome,” said Upper House Greens MP and environment spokesman Ian Cohen today.

“It’s a modest initiative and there’s more to do, but at least in Queensland they’re moving in the right direction.

“The commercial reality is that industry will also move once the market for low emissions vehicles is stimulated.

“There are plenty of people in the community that are already voluntarily spending more to lower their household emissions by making their homes more energy efficient. These people should be rewarded with cheaper registration fees if they’re doing the same thing with their own transport.

“Of course nothing beats cycling, walking or catching the bus, but if people are going to drive their car to work, then the Greens would prefer they did that in a hybrid rather than a Hummer,” said Mr Cohen.
