Greens MLC Ian Cohen today welcomed this week’s second water recycling announcement by the NSW government, this time at the Kurnell peninsula which was earmarked as the site of the controversial desalination plant proposal.
“It is pleasing to see the government finally listening to common sense and taking up water recycling opportunities. The siting of the plant at Kurnell, with its extensive industrial reuse potential, also shows up the foolishness of the proposed desalination plant.” Mr Cohen said.
“I understand that this is to be a small scale plant, piping treated effluent from Cronulla to Kurnell for reuse by local industry. I commend this move and urge the government to pursue more industrial reuse opportunities.
“450 billion litres of sewage are pumped into our oceans every year. By working collaboratively with industry, the government could not only vastly reduce the amount of potable water wasted for industrial purposes but also help to clean up our oceans. It’s a win win solution.
“While I welcome the announcement, I urge the government to be cautious in laying the pipeline, making sure that environmental impacts are limited and fragile sand dunes are not damaged.” Mr Cohen said.
