Greens MLC Ian Cohen has challenged NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald to prove that effluent from the sewerage treatment plant did not contribute to the fish kill at Salty Lagoon on the Far North Coast of NSW.
“It is obvious to everyone that the discharge coming form the sewerage plant is not good for the local ecosystem,” Mr Cohen said.
“I questioned the minister intensely about the issue in a parliamentary estimates committee earlier this week in Sydney.
“During that questioning it became clear that Minister Macdonald did not think the fish kill had anything to do with the sewerage plant.
“Ten years of this filthy effluent is clearly damaging the environment and it is up to the Minister to prove that it was not a contributing factor in the recent mass death of marine and bird life.
“At a minimum the sewerage plant needs to be upgraded immediately,” Mr Cohen said.
