Greens celebrate reconstitution of democracy for Aboriginal people of NSW - 17 May 2007

This Saturday, 19th May, the Greens will pay tribute to the tenacity of indigenous Australians who will be celebrating the NSW Aboriginal Land Council Election results on hard won ground.

“The Greens have campaigned hard to ensure that democracy for Aboriginal people was reconstituted in this state,” said Upper House Greens MP and spokesman on Aboriginal Affairs Ian Cohen.

“We are delighted that a record number of voters are expected to turn out for the forthcoming election for the state’s peak Aboriginal representative body.

“We are equally delighted that common sense prevailed, and that amendments to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, fought for by the Greens, resulted in 9 full-time councillor positions representing 9 regions. Last year the Greens worked closely with representatives of Local Aboriginal Land Councils from across the state to ensure that the changes to the Act reflected their needs.

“To everyone voting for or contesting the nine Councillor positions, we wish you well, and we look forward to working closely with the reinvigorated NSWALC.” Mr Cohen said.
