Greens call for transparency on logging deals - 5 October 2006

Greens MLC Ian Cohen today called for transparency in logging deals between the government and logging companies, in light of revelations that Boral has received over $20million of public money as part of a deal in North East NSW.

“It is entirely unacceptable that Boral should receive in excess of $20 million of the community’s money. This sort of hand-out to the logging industry is nothing short of scandalous. The public needs to know what exactly Boral are receiving this money for.” Mr Cohen said.

“Boral have access to over half of all timber from public land between Sydney and the Queensland border and can also seek to source timber from private land. They have a great deal of control in these areas due to exclusive wood rights.

“Intensive logging in North East NSW is of great concern to communities in that area. To learn that Boral are also receiving large sums of money from the public purse adds insult to injury. The details of any deals the government has entered into must be made clear.

“In the next sitting week of Parliament I will be calling on the Government to release documents detailing the deals made between itself and Boral, through a call for papers. “ Mr Cohen said.
