As journalists queue up to write about the failure of the NSW Government ‘at every level’, the business community and consumers are leading the fight to keep our food safe from genetic modification.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – especially if your handyman happens to be Morris Iemma and your issue is the ongoing viability of our food crops,” said Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen.
“It sends shivers down my spine contemplating the scenario of GM food crops being managed by the same people that have brought us the Tcard, the NSW health system and the mad desalination scheme.
“The announcement that the Foodland supermarket chain has rejected the use of genetically modified food in its own range of products is a vote of no confidence in the ability of Morris Iemma’s Government to manage the liability created by approving GM. Foodland should be congratulated for their leadership.
“Some of Australia’s best known companies are voting ‘no’ on the GM issue. Australia’s largest food company Goodman Fielder, Tatiara Meats and now Foodland have all responded to consumer concerns on GM.
“Agriculture in NSW has enough problems to deal with already with the challenges of climate change, water shortages and peak oil to name a few. The last thing farmers need is an incompetent Government trying their hand at introducing GM food crops.
“We simply don’t need new problems including contamination and legal liability, segregation issues, GM super weeds, loss of market premiums for GM free product and the wholesale destruction of the nation’s clean, green food producer status.
“If the Government would follow the lead of the people and progressive food companies we might have a chance to turn the GM ship around before it docks on our shores on the 3rd of March.
“As Iemma generated disasters rain down I question my own support for fixed term governments,” said Mr Cohen.
