Emergency Services and Community Heroes Commended - 9 February 2009

“As Greens spokesperson for Emergency Services I applaud the fine work of brave souls in all our emergency services. I urge people to donate to relief funds set up by the Red Cross on 1800 811 700 or go to www.redcross.org.au and the Salvation Army on 137 258 or go to www.salvos.org.au,” says Greens MP Ian Cohen.

“I join my fellow Greens and send my condolences to the victims of the Victorian bushfires from this terrible tragedy.”

“Support from the whole community is needed at this time. It is also important to take emergency strategy preparations around properties like cleaning up any ground litter and debris or leaves in guttering as well as ensuring that all water supplies are operating like hoses or water tanks. Practise easy to do risk management but particularly preparedness for life and safety and support for those on the front line at this time of crisis.”

Mr Cohen believes that the community can be involved in the public surveillance of arsonists. “Deliberate arson is a serious crime against life, property and the environment. This type of crime detection can be greatly assisted by public awareness. If you see any suspicious activity call the authorities.”

“Taking inadvertent risks, like throwing cigarette butts out car windows or into scrub, can also have serious consequences, especially during these times of high bushfire alert.”
