Court decision on recycling shows Government the way - 21 December 2005

The court decision that will allow Sydney Services to access waste water for recycling shows how out of step the Government’s desalination plans are, Greens MLC Ian Cohen said today.

“The Government should have been leading in the push to recycle the city’s water. Instead the Iemma Government has been badly shown up by the private sector,” Mr Cohen said.

“The court decision is further evidence of this Government’s muddle headed approach to Sydney’s water needs.

“Modern water recycling techniques, reuse and conservation measures are the way of the future yet the Government continues to pursue its outdated supply side solutions.

“It’s time for an urgent re-think on the Kurnell desalination plant.

“The community doesn’t want it, the city doesn’t need it and now the private sector’s use of the courts is showing that recycling is the better alternative,” Mr Cohen said.
