Coastline a casualty if climate change ignored - 19 July 2006

Time is running out for the New South Wales Government to act to limit greenhouse emissions that could lead to dramatic changes to the State’s coastline, said Greens Upper House MP, Ian Cohen.

“In its draft report, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted devastating effects of even a small rise of sea levels.

“A rise in sea levels of only 20 centimetres would be an economic and environmental disaster for New South Wales’ coastal communities, with homes, businesses and beaches destroyed.

“The Iemma Government must take action now to reduce greenhouse emissions that impact on climate change by committing to a mandatory renewable energy target of at least 15 per cent by 2012 and 25 per cent by 2020.

“Jobs and investment in clean energy sources, like solar and wind power would flourish under a renewable energy target.

“The Government must also legislate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions in NSW of at least 20 per cent by 2020 and at least 60 per cent by 2050 and place a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations.

“Slowing down climate change is no longer an optional extra for the NSW Government . The future of our coastline needs action now.”
