The announcement today of $2.5 million to study the impacts of climate change on New South Wales primary industries and environment will do nothing to stop the progress of climate change, said Ian Cohen, NSW Greens Upper House MP.
“It is all well and good to spend money studying the potential impacts of climate change, but by Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald should know that now is the time for action, ” said Mr Cohen.
“Moving to arrest climate change should surely be the Government’s top priority, rather than more studies designed to give the impression that the Government is taking action on this issue.
“Instead, the NSW Government backs the expansion of the coal industry at the expense of renewable energy producers. Premier Iemma and his ministers have an apparent lack of interest in fostering any sort of renewable energy industry in NSW.
“The Government must move quickly to support clean energy, such as wind, solar and wave. A state-based mandatory renewable energy target of 20 per cent by 2012 would be an inspired move to reduce NSW’s greenhouse emissions and combat climate change.
“The Government could put $2.5 million towards installing latest technology smart meters in every home – a move which would reduce energy demand.
“The people of NSW know how to save water, and if the State Government would encourage people to save energy, the public would be likely to take up the challenge,” Mr Cohen said.
