Activists: “stop logging, start red gum science” - 24 September 2007

Activists this morning have intervened in Moira State Forest on the Murray River between Barmah and Deniliquin, in an attempt to halt allegedly illegal clear felling of Red Gums long enough to facilitate urgent scientific studies.

“Morris Iemma and Ian Macdonald have an easy option before them this morning – move the logging out of these areas while species impact statements and proper environmental assessments are prepared,” said Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen.

“I have contacted the Minister this morning asking him to immediately move logging operations in the Moira, Perricoota and Millewa State Forests to other compartments nearby that are not subject to action in the Land and Environment Court,” said Mr Cohen.

“What is Minister Macdonald thinking? While the Victorian Government is strengthening its system of Red Gum national parks, his government is clear felling the forest compartments that scientists are trying to assess.

“I commend the good people of NSW Red Gum Forest Action who are trying to preserve these iconic forests long enough for the courts and the scientists to be able to evaluate their unique values.

“For a minister like Ian Macdonald - who prides himself on backing his decisions with science - his reckless action in the Red Gum forests reveals the hypocrisy of using science only when it suits his political objectives,” Mr Cohen said.
