Greens MLC Ian Cohen today praised emergency services and Surf Lifesaving Australia for their quick mobilisation and reassuring response to the potential tsunami resulting from this morning’s earthquake in the Solomon Islands.
Mr Cohen, who survived the Boxing Day tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004, said that the precautionary closing of beaches, shut-down of the Manly ferry service and other safety measures being taken were an appropriate response to the threat.
“I am pleased not only with the effectiveness of the warning system, but also with the way that agencies have worked together to disseminate information. The precautionary closure of beaches and suspension of ferry services should be commended.
“I hope that low-lying coastal roads would also be closed off when there is a threat of a tsunami. There is a danger of drivers unaware of such a threat putting themselves and others at risk.
“My heartfelt sympathy goes out to those whose family members are missing after the earthquake and tsunami, as well as those who have lost their homes in the tragedy.” Mr Cohen said.
