Sydneysiders Show Government Way on Water Saving - 1 February 2006

“A significant reduction in water use by Sydney households over the last year shows that incentives to save water would be a better alternative to desalination” said Greens MLC Ian Cohen today.

The latest report by the Water Services Association of Australia, launched yesterday, shows that average urban household water usage has been continuing to decline, with Sydneysiders leading the way. The report stated that the saving of almost 6 per cent last year could not be attributed solely to mandatory water restrictions.

“A water use reduction by households of nearly 6 per cent is a fantastic start. It shows that the people of Sydney are willing to play their part in saving water. It is easy to imagine that if the Government provided incentives, such as step pricing and rebates for water tanks, even more water could be saved.” Mr Cohen said.

“The people of Sydney should be congratulated for the effort they have made in saving water. This is proof that public education can work to make people change their everyday habits.

“Further water savings, achieved with the help of incentives, together with other strategies such as stormwater harvesting and water recycling, would avoid the need for a greenhouse gas intensive desalination plant altogether” Mr Cohen said.
