Spinal cord injuries week – time to ‘Walk on’ - 11 November 2009

Spinal Cord Injuries Awareness Week was acknowledged in the NSW Parliament today by the Greens spokesperson on Disability Services, Ian Cohen. Mr Cohen’s motion drew attention to the alarming annual increase in spinal chord injuries and the physical and psychological devastation they caused. His motion also acknowledged a new international program to improve recovery and rehabilitation that was launched this week.

“My motion was designed to draw attention to the approximately 10,000 Australians currently living with spinal cord injuries. I also wanted to raise the alarming fact that the number of Australians suffering from spinal cord injury is increasing by nearly 400 annually. This is an alarming increase that we must work hard to reverse,” says Ian Cohen.

“I support the initiative of Spinal Cord Injuries Australia who this week launched in Australia a program called “Walk On”. Walk On” brings the world leading Project Walk program to Australia. This program provides people with quadriplegia and paraplegia the opportunity to gain a better quality of life. They can be more independent, to better control debilitating pain and physical issues associated with a spinal chord injury and increasing their chances of being able to walk again through intensive exercise and physiotherapy.

“Summer is nearly upon us and it is the time when more spinal injuries occur. Let us hope that better awareness about preventing spinal injures throughout this week means fewer people will have to face living with a spinal injury.”
