Greens MLC Ian Cohen says a new toll road through the North Coast of NSW would be for the benefit of the truckling industry not the travelling public or locals.
“Any new motorway through the north coast of NSW would undoubtedly cause massive environmental damage to areas already under pressure from tourism and development,” Mr Cohen said.
“Constructing another huge motoring corridor through the Pacific coastline of NSW is a mistake. The North coast is NSW’s play-ground, full of visiting tourists all year round. Increasingly valuable farm and home sites would be destroyed by another motorway.
“Today’s announcement is a smokescreen designed to cover years of Government inaction.
“Commonwealth and state ministers must immediately fix the black spots on the existing Pacific Highway and not use the proposal of a new motorway to avoid action now.
“It is time Governments began looking at spreading the load by moving freight inland and onto trains rather than more plans to trample the North Coast for the benefit of the trucking industry,” Mr Cohen said.
