Premier must listen to the people on Snowy sale - 24 April 2006

Greens MLC Ian Cohen says Premier Iemma’s statements today that he would not delay the sale of the Snowy are the sign of an arrogant and out of touch Premier.

“The Parliament hasn’t even debated the sale, let alone had a vote, yet the Premier is insisting on rushing headlong into the privatisation of one of this state’s great assets,” Mr Cohen said.

“Just last week a public meeting of 400 people in Cooma unanimously opposed the sale and called for a full and independent study to assess the merits of the Government’s proposal.

“For the Premier to ignore that call from the local community is a sign that he is both arrogant and out of step with public sentiment in NSW.

“The scientific committee required, under the 1997 law that corporatised Snowy Hyrdo, to monitor environmental effects has not even been set up.

“Environmental flows will obviously he harder to secure in a fully privatised Snowy that is duty bound to put shareholders’ interests first.

“There is a growing public outcry that a great part NSW history is going to be sold off with little parliamentary or public debate.

“The Snowy Hydro is not Morris Iemma’s, it belongs to the people of NSW, who want it to be kept in public hands,” Ian Cohen said.
