Pacific Highway upgrade report shows RTA deficiencies - 21 December 2005

The report from the Upper House Inquiry into the Pacific Highway upgrades shows how deficient the RTA has been, Greens MLC Ian Cohen said today.

“The committee has made a number of recommendations critical of the RTA’s performance,” Mr Cohen said.

“Key to the Committee’s nine recommendations is the need for the RTA to lift its game in how it liases with the community.

“The RTA has been found badly wanting in regards to community consultation.

“The Committee’s recommendations can be summed up by saying that it is time the RTA began working with the community rather than always overriding it.

“The report also calls for the NSW Government to better handle claims for compensation for those who are affected by the highway or have their properties compulsorily acquired.

“The Iemma Government should use this report as an opportunity to properly assess all the alternatives - from assessing inland routes to upgrading the rail infrastructure in NSW,” Mr Cohen said.

Ian Cohen is a member of the Legislative Council Committee that produced today’s report.
