Pacific Highway path invisible - 27 June 2006

The preferred route of the Tintenbar to Ewingsdale section of the Pacific Highway appears to have been chosen by the RTA, but residents are still in the dark, said Ian Cohen, NSW Greens MLC, following a government response to an Upper House inquiry on upgrades of the road.

“The Government’s response refers to agricultural investigations that were ‘used by the RTA as one of a number of considerations in selecting a preferred route for this section of the highway’,” Mr Cohen said.

“Clearly the RTA has a preferred route for this section of the highway. Why are they sitting on it? The lives of thousands of residents are on hold, waiting for this announcement, which was promised by the end of this month.

“The Government response also says a report on the inland alternative route to the Pacific Highway, the Summerland Way, is being finalised.

“The inquiry called for this report to be conducted independently of the RTA. Not only has the Government ignored the recommendation, the RTA has lagged behind on releasing the report.

“The RTA’s Robert Higgins told the inquiry that the investigation of the alternative route would be submitted to the Minister by the end of March. Three months later we are still waiting to see it.

“Unfortunately the Government response to the inquiry’s recommendations is at best, half-hearted. The residents and holidaymakers of the NSW North Coast need action, and they need it now.”
