“I welcome NSW Health’s agreement to purchase the Hunters Hill house built on uranium tailings”, says Ian Cohen, NSW Greens MLC. “I am pleased to have been part of a process that has resulted in the resolution of this issue for the owners of the house. “
“Having chaired the committee of enquiry that reported on the contamination, I congratulate the government for acknowledging that there is an issue of contamination to be resolved on Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill.”
“The agreement to negotiate a purchase of the house at 11 Nelson Parade confirms that the evidence that emerged from the committee’s enquiry was compelling’, says Ian Cohen.
“NSW Health already owns the properties at 7 and 9 Nelson Parade — which are fenced off with warning signs. If, for people to be safe, it means buying all the properties on that street then the Government should be prepared to do that.”
“There is also the issue of potential marine environment contamination adjacent to the Nelson Parade properties that is yet to be properly determined.”
“There has been a history of ongoing distress among residents who are concerned about the health impacts from contamination levels on Nelson Parade.”
“The committee recommends a more extensive testing program to rule out or confirm the distribution or seepage of the contaminants beyond the borders of the properties that the government has acknowledged are contaminated,” says Ian Cohen.
“I hope this purchase is the beginning of the resolution of the site and a recognition of the importance of dealing with similar issues of Sydney’s industrial legacy. I welcome the Government’s purchase of 11 Nelson Parade as a step in the right direction for cleaning up the area for good.”
