A flyer distributed to NSW Parliament MPs this morning is littered with misinformation about the Greens policies on energy production and coal mining, said Ian Cohen, Upper House Greens MP.
“This flyer could only have been distributed by a member of Parliament or a member’s staffer, but there has been no member’s name attached to it,” Mr Cohen said.
“Is this the government’s way of attacking the Greens forward-thinking policies on renewable energy production? It is an underhand, sneaky way of pushing the agenda of the NSW Minerals Council, a lobby group that wants to expand the coal industry, mainly for export rather than domestic energy production.
“Despite the flyer’s assertions, the Greens’ vision for a renewable energy future is not a fairy tale. However a greater reliance on renewable energy would only be inconvenient to fossil fuel producers, represented by organisations such as the NSW Minerals Council.
“The NSW Government has no apparent interest in fostering clean energy sources in this state. The Greens call on the Premier to follow the lead of other states in setting a mandatory renewable target of 20 per cent by 2012.
“In the anonomously-distributed flyer, the green tree frog has been reduced to advertising spin for the mining industry.
“It is a perversion of one of the great symbols of environmental sensitivity and survival.
