Greens MLC Ian Cohen has today congratulated the State Government on its water recycling scheme for parts of western Sydney, but would like to know what plans there are, if any, to extend it to the rest of the city.
“This is a great step forward and the Government is to be commended for it,” said Mr Cohen, “but why only western Sydney? Eastern Sydney is hardly lacking in potential sewage that could be incorporated into the government’s recycling plans.
“The Government still allows 450 billion litres of sewage to be pumped into our oceans each year. That is a massive amount of potential water wasted when compared with the 27 billion litres the Premier claims will be saved by the scheme in western Sydney.
“A great step backward is the forthcoming Liverpool to Ashfield pipeline, which will involve treated sewage being dumped back into the raw sewage in the western branch main sewer at Ashfield. Here we have clean reusable effluent fouled again and released wastefully into our ocean environment. Why not use this pipeline for its original purpose, to provide recycled water to homes and businesses along its route?
“I appreciate and value that the NSW Government is now turning to recycling as part of the solution to western Sydney’s water issues, and every effort is to be supported. It is, however, little more than a drop in the ocean if the wasteful practices of the past continue across the rest of the city,” Mr Cohen said.
