Give ‘The Farm’ national surfing reserve status - 10 August 2007

Local Killalea surfer Chris Homer’s nomination of ‘The Farm’ for legal protection as a national surfing reserve was supported wholeheartedly today by Upper House Greens MP Ian Cohen.

“I was at Angourie on the NSW north coast when Tony Kelly proclaimed it as the state’s first national surfing reserve.

“At the time, Mr Kelly was quoted in local media as saying that ‘the new status of the beach will protect it from any changes that are not consistent with retaining its natural beauty and legendary status among the surfing community’.

“The Farm has a similar legendary status with the surfing community, as increasing visitor numbers attest. If Mr Kelly supports the idea of formalising The Farm’s status, then he must also support the maintenance of the natural beauty of the area, as he said in Angourie.

“It is not possible to maintain the natural beauty of Killalea and the reserve area by building lodges, pools, tennis courts, a conference centre and restaurants.” Mr Cohen said.

“2005-06 figures from the Bureau of Statistics show that there are more than 130,000 surfers in NSW, with more that come from interstate and overseas. One of the reasons people travel to surf spots and support local economies, is that they’re drawn by the natural values of the area,” said Mr Cohen.
