“Today’s report is a step in the right direction. Now we need to see it backed up with action,” Mr Cohen said.
“Extended Producer Responsibility - whereby manufactures have a duty to deal with the products they make once they have been used and discarded - is something all industries will have to adopt in the future.
“For too long the Government has resisted attempts to regulate to reduce waste and packaging.
“Simple cost-effective solutions could drastically reduce waste in NSW.
“For example I have given notice of a private members bill for Container Deposit Legislation. The scheme would work by putting a 10-cent refund on all beverage containers. It would force the drink packaging industry to get serious about recycling while no doubt also being a nifty way for some children to earn a bit of pocket money.
“A similar scheme is already working in South Australia and with a bit of modification it would work well here.
“If the Labor Government wants to do something positive, popular and environmentally creative in the lead up to the NSW 2007 poll, they should grab my bill and run with it,” Mr Cohen said.
