Desalination debacle must stop - 23 November 2005

Revelations that taxpayers face a multimillion dollar compensation bill for the Kurnell desalination plant must cause a Government re-think on the project, Greens MLC Ian Cohen said today.

“Desalination is turning into another Government debacle,” Mr Cohen said.

“The plant is a pollution nightmare that will send the state’s greenhouse gas emissions sky rocketing. Now we find that on top of the $2 Billion construction cost, other water operators will have to be compensated.

“The Premier should show some leadership and put a halt to further development of the plant before it is too late.

“I am moving for the entire project to be subjected to a full Upper House inquiry. I am increasingly confident that the cross benchers and Opposition will support my move.

“The Government should also reveal the cost of its public relations budget for this venture - including trucking over Perth desalinated water for its ‘mock wine tasting’ scheme.

“Key documents about the project are expected to be released to the Legislative Council this afternoon as a result of my motion passed by the Upper House two weeks ago,” Mr Cohen said.
