Coffs Harbour Beach to be trashed by Surf Life Saving Championships - 11 May 2007

The decision to change the venue for the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships to Boambee Beach, Coffs Harbour, will see the sensitive coastal environment trashed, according to Greens Upper House MP Ian Cohen.

“The proposed developments for the championships would destroy sensitive coastal vegetation on the dune system over a length of almost two kilometres on the reserve. The works would include the clearing of over thirty hectares of mature dune vegetation. This risks exposing the area to massive erosion.” Mr Cohen said.

“The area includes an endangered ecological community and is habitat to threatened species, including migratory birds and turtles. The sensitive vegetation in the State Park is of high conservation value and provides natural protection against coastal erosion and the threat of sea level rise.

“As a keen surfer myself, I am highly supportive of the championships. But they should be done in a sustainable manner. Government agencies should work with Council, environment groups, Surf Life Saving Australia, along with coastal experts, to conduct a “green” surf carnival. This means no vegetation can be lost at Boambee Beach.

“The Championships should be held at a beach that has existing infrastructure. The Coffs Harbour community can still get the benefits of hosting the event without the sensitive coastal environment being destroyed.

“With the advent of climate change, our beaches will be under increasing assault from sea level rise and increased cyclonic activity – this is only a matter of time. The degradation of Boambee beach by this proposed development will make it far more vulnerable to the elements.

“I understand that the ECOSURF policy commits Surf Life Saving Australia to the protection of ecologically sensitive coastal environments. I cannot fathom how such environmental destruction for the purpose of the championships can be justified under this policy.

“Last night’s decision by council to revert to Boambee beach is very disappointing. I strongly urge Council and the NSW government and Surf Life Saving Australia to work together to come up with a sustainable option for the event.” Mr Cohen said.
