Greens councillors in Ashfield are right to look at all options that will encourage people to use alternatives to air conditioners in their homes, said Ian Cohen, NSW Greens Upper House MP.
“The Greens councillors are not seeking to ban air conditioners,” Mr Cohen said.
“In fact the councillors have taken the lead by examining all options for residents to heat and cool their homes. Any move to support alternatives to energy-sucking air conditioning systems is welcome.
“The State Government failed the environment by watering down the BASIX scheme at the whim of developers, and local councils are left to pick up the slack.
“Everyone has the right to feel comfortable inside their home, and people should be encouraged to use energy efficient methods to achieve this.
“The take up of air conditioning has caused a surge in demand for power, and led to increased greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
“There are exciting new technologies and building design methods that make existing air conditioning look very old hat.
“Home builders and renovators who install good insulation, use natural ventilation and shading systems – like that old technology, trees – won’t need air conditioning. Residents will save energy, reduce greenhouse emissions and save on power bills. It’s a win-win situation for residents and the environment.
“Sydneysiders showed how they could meet the challenge of reducing their water consumption. Let’s take up the challenge of reducing the amount of power we use every day.
“The Greens want quality outcomes for the residents of New South Wales and the environment. This can only be achieved by examining all options.”
